54 NIGHTS

A Trojan Horse

54 Nights is seemingly a micro lens: a factual recounting of 54 nights that we spent at Studio 54 during its first 2 1/2 years. However, the individual nights are vehicles for zeroing in on every macro facet that made Studio STUDIO. I didn’t fully grasp this when I wrote the book. But Ian Schrager, Myra Scheer and Marc Benecke did—and I’m grateful to them for being so astute.

It's-about-the-music

54 Nights contains the only existing documentation of the brilliance of Richie Kaczor, Studio’s main DJ. Because we were hunter-gatherers of off-the-radar-screen dance tunes, I personally recorded playlists after visits to Studio.

A Tribute

to Richie Kaczor

For teaching us the art of dynamic, long-form musical storytelling.

At his best

From an unparalleled period of dance music: winter '77-'78.

Chapter after chapter

Richie's artful song selection and Bobby DeSilva's imaginative use of lights & props made 15-minute songs feel like fleetingly-short stories.

From our vinyl library

True to Richie's standards, 7" short-length versions didn't gain entry.

From our book

54 long-length songs & medleys that were Studio's musical bedrock

Many of the giants' song titles may not be familiar. But then, Richie Kaczor never settled for the familiar.
